Global Higher Education in Times of Upheaval: On Common Goods, Geopolitics and Decolonization

We are thrilled to host Professor Simon Marginson this morning for our reading session on Chapter 9 of his latest book, Global Higher Education in Times of Upheaval: On Common Goods, Geopolitics and Decolonization.

We achieved a record-breaking turnout of 22 participants – the highest attendance ever for a CHELPS reading session.

Everyone engaged deeply with “Configurations of Power in Global Science,” exploring the tensions between national interests and the open, networked global science system, the rise of multipolar scientific capacity (especially in China and emerging nations), and the persistent Western hegemony that still shapes publishing, rankings, and what counts as legitimate knowledge.

The questions from the floor were sharp and thoughtful, sparking lively discussion on geopolitics, decolonization, and how we might move toward a more inclusive global common good in higher education. A heartfelt thank you to Professor Marginson for sharing his insights so generously, and to all who joined and contributed so actively.

Moments like this are exactly why we exist at the Centre for Higher Education Leadership and Policy Studies (CHELPS) at The Education University of Hong Kong.
