A Higher Education Hub for Doctoral Education: The Case of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme

A Higher Education Dialogue was held this afternoon (17 April 2026) at the Mini Theatre in the EdUHK Library.

Dr Ewan Wright delivered a compelling presentation on “A Higher Education Hub for Doctoral Education: The Case of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme”, followed by an engaging discussion with our Executive Co-Director, Prof Anatoly Oleksiyenko.

What stood out most was the lively 10-minute open discussion, during which participants candidly shared their personal journeys:

1. Why they chose Hong Kong for education or employment over other destinations;
2. The opportunities and constraints they face when considering a long-term career here;
3. Their reflections on what these experiences mean for Hong Kong’s ambition to become a globally leading education hub, along with practical policy recommendations.

The openness and depth of the sharing from both early-career researchers and established academics created a genuinely rich and honest exchange. It was inspiring to hear such diverse perspectives on Hong Kong’s role in the global higher education landscape.

Events like this remind us why building a vibrant doctoral education ecosystem matters, not just for individual careers, but for Hong Kong’s future as an international education hub.

We are grateful to Dr Ewan Wright, Prof Anatoly Oleksiyenko, and all the participants for such a meaningful afternoon.
