Student Voices: Reflections from the Second Cohort of MA in Global Higher Education

We are delighted to share heartfelt reflections from our second cohort of students in the MA in Global Higher Education programme. As we wrap up another successful year, our students generously shared what made their learning journey at EdUHK so meaningful. From the supportive student-teacher relationships and diverse academic environment to valuable mentoring and hands-on internship experiences, their stories beautifully highlight the unique strengths of the programme. We are truly proud of their growth and grateful for their kind words.

Below are some of their sharing:

From Wang Shaoju, Sara:

As a mainland student who came to Hong Kong for the MA in Global Higher Education programme at the EdUHK, what impressed me most was the warm and supportive student-teacher interaction. All professors were always willing to listen to our voices, provide targeted guidance and resources according to our needs, and offer genuine care. This strong humanistic support completely eased my initial sense of alienation after moving to Hong Kong. I believe it will also be a great comfort to future applicants from the mainland.

The programme also provided us with excellent access to top academic events, allowing us to meet leading scholars in person. This was highly motivating for those pursuing an academic career. Even for students not aiming for academia, the cutting-edge insights we gained broadened our horizons and helped shape a more positive worldview.

Moreover, the diverse learning environment—with classmates from varied backgrounds (both working professionals and fresh graduates), along with international scholars and teachers—exposed us to multiple perspectives that greatly supported our personal growth. The programme also offered direct career support through office hours and career fairs, as well as various enriching activities such as field trips to iconic Hong Kong landmarks and cross-programme collaborations. These opportunities helped us build friendships and gain practical experience.

To future applicants: Be proactive! Opportunities are always available if you reach out for them.

From WANG Qiongyao:

I had a wonderful learning experience in the MA in Global Higher Education programme—one that I will never forget. The professors were always encouraging, kind, and generous with their advice and study tips. They were also very patient in answering all our questions.

From YANG Congyi:

During my one-year study in the MA in Global Higher Education programme, the greatest gain I made was the significant improvement in my critical thinking ability. In class, teachers never simply provided standard answers; instead, they guided us to analyse problems from multiple perspectives.

What attracted me most was the diverse academic atmosphere. Students came from different professional backgrounds, and our discussions on the same topics often generated unexpected sparks of insight. Group presentations also helped strengthen team cohesion.

Although the classes were conducted in Mandarin, both teachers and classmates actively encouraged the use of English for communication, creating a more open and inclusive learning environment. It is particularly worth mentioning that the teachers were highly dedicated and responsible—they patiently answered questions after class and proactively followed up on our learning progress.

If you hope to grow in an environment that is both academically rigorous and warmly supportive, this programme would be an excellent choice. I sincerely hope the MA in Global Higher Education continues to thrive and improve.

From QIU Zhirou:

This is my experience and reflection from the MA in Global Higher Education (MA(Global(HE)) programme.

During the core course “Entrepreneurialism and Interprofessional Learning in Higher Education,” I had the valuable opportunity to connect with my mentor, Cyrus, Assistant Project Manager at CHELPS. With his extensive experience in Hong Kong’s higher education policy field, our discussions helped me gain clarity on transitioning from a teaching role on the mainland to an administrative position at a Hong Kong university.

Cyrus helped me understand the three distinct career tracks in Hong Kong universities—administration, teaching, and research—and offered tailored advice based on my background in student services and activity organisation. He also emphasised that my mainland teaching experience and bilingual ability are not disadvantages, but unique strengths in the local job market.

This mentoring experience reshaped my career goals and provided me with a practical roadmap. In addition, the MA(Global(HE) programme offers internship opportunities that allow students to gain hands-on experience. I was fortunate to participate in an internship involving website development, Redbook content management, and video shooting. These real-world tasks significantly enhanced my skills and confidence.

I truly appreciate the opportunity to engage with an industry mentor and gain practical experience through the MA(Global(HE) programme. Such cross-professional learning is invaluable for anyone interested in higher education administration in Hong Kong.
